Rewind: Vampire Knight

Sothis just added a greatly demanded feature to Anime-Planet: “times watched.” We can now select how many times we’ve watched something, and that will be calculated into our “life on anime.” I haven’t re-watched a lot of series, but it was still fun to go in and update my profile. 

Two titles I marked as “2x” watched were Vampire Knight and Vampire Knight: Guilty, from a popular shoujo franchise. I used to love Vampire Knight. In fact, I think I may have seen the first series three times. It’s been at least a year and a half since my last vampire anime phase, though. I’d like to watch it once more to see if I still like it as much. 

What made me love Vampire Knight? 

First, I came across it before cynicism settled in. I was a cynic about a lot of things, but anime was not one of them. 

Second, the squeal factor: Bishies. Romance. Love interests with dark and mysterious histories. Guys who will fight for their girl, and fight pretty well. If I had to pick between Kaname from Vampire Knight and Edward Cullen, I’d pick Kaname (no, this is not an invitation to hate on Twilight). 

Third, it’s dark and suspenseful. All my squealing aside, I honestly was interested in the story for the story’s sake. 

Fourth, it made me smile. Despite the dark stuff, Vampire Knight could be quite funny at times. The humor mostly relied on characters as their personalities annoyed or inconvenienced each other. It provided great comic relief within the more serious setting.

From what I remember, Vampire Knight was pretty good. Not my top recommendation, but it was very fun to watch. In fact, I can't think of any more recent shoujo anime that entertained me nearly so much.
